Back in 2003, the Employment Lawyers Association asked me to speak on Flexible working in the legal profession. This was prompted by the introduction of the Employment Act 2002 giving employees the right to request flexible working.
- Diversity in the legal profession
In the Women Lawyers Forum in 2005, (Women Lawyers Forum ) the session on flexible working emphasised the need to create flexibility in the profession as a way to support diversity. There is no point in striving for diversity in our legal system if its framework lacks flexibility.
The session, ‘Flexible working – the Individual, the Employer and You’, presented arguments on each title.

I was asked to speak at the Women Lawyer’s Forum in March 2005 on a panel speaking about Flexible working in the Legal Profession.

The government hopes that most requests to work flexibly can be dealt with amicably and consensually in the workplace, and outlines a process for doing so. But the legislation also spells out a legal framework for appeals, arbitration and employment tribunals, as well as pointing out a range of other relevant legislation on discrimination in the workplace.
